This History is dedicated to the nurses that belong to the West Virginia Nurses
Association because belonging is demonstrating leadership in the profession. I hope you enjoy it and that it will inspire others to continue to build upon it.
Special thanks to the Cultural Center Archives and History Library for maintaining and preserving information that was valuable in creating this document. Their staff was very helpful, kind and accommodating to help with this endeavor. Please visit this library and enjoy the excitement of the past as it comes alive before your eyes by reviewing the WVNA conference proceedings, early board minutes, past issues of the Weather Vane, pictures and other valuable historic documents. It is my hope that future generations of the West Virginia Nurses Association will continue to preserve the history of this organization through the use of their services.
Also special thanks to the WVNA office staff and Connie Caravasos, long time WVNA member, for giving me her summation of “A Century of Nursing in West Virginia 1907-1957” by Donavan H. Bond, Associate Professor of Journalism West Virginia University and published by WVNA.
It has been an honor to be involved with this important task. What an awesome organization with rich history. I regret the gaps in this document due to the unavailability of information for some years. To clear this void I hope additional nurse leaders will come forward and help make this document complete and continue it through our next 100 years. Please contact the Central Office or myself if you have an interest in this process or information to contribute.
Sincerely,
Janice Muriel Lyons Smith, MSN, RNC Graduate Marshall University School of Nursing (AS 1970) and WVU School of Nursing (BSN 1983 & MSN 1989)
